Meet Timothy B. Cavanaugh, MD

In practice since 1991, Timothy B. Cavanaugh, MD is a noted innovator in ophthalmology.  He has performed over 15,000 laser vision correction procedures for the correction of all levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  He was a key study investigator who helped refractive lasers get approval in the USA and was the first surgeon in the region to use the microkeratome used in modern LASIK procedures.

Dr. Cavanaugh received both his medical degree and his ophthalmic residency training at the University of Kansas where he was Chief Resident.  He completed a Surgical Fellowship in advanced corneal and refractive surgery at the prestigious Wilmer Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which is consistently named the number one eye hospital and training program in the nation. In 1991, he began his professional career as an ophthalmologist at Hunkeler Eye Centers in Kansas City, Missouri, and remained there until establishing the Cavanaugh Eye Center in 2002. Dr. Cavanaugh is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Along with serving his patients, Dr. Cavanaugh is an active teacher and lecturer at medical meetings, as well as a published author with numerous scientific articles and textbook chapters to his credit. He is also an active member of several highly regarded professional organizations, including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and American Academy of Ophthalmology. His commitment to excellence in ophthalmology has been acknowledged by both his patients and his colleagues in the industry. In a poll of 500 area physicians, Dr. Cavanaugh was named one of the top two ophthalmologists in Kansas City.  He and his wife Linda are parents to three young boys.

Our Optometrist

Eric S. Beatty, OD

We are proud to introduce you to our new optometrist, Dr. Eric S. Beatty.  Dr. Beatty works with Dr. Cavanaugh with a majority of his practice focused on surgical management and medical eye care, while Dr. Cavanaugh focuses on surgical care.  He is a dedicated doctor with a passion for his patients and a talent for diagnosis, treatment and surgical management.

"I love taking care of our patients," Dr. Beatty says. "Excellent vision is vital to maintaining a high quality of life and I really enjoy being able to help our patients achieve and maintain outstanding vision".

Dr. Beatty is originally from Iowa. He received his undergraduate B.S. degree in Zoology from Iowa State University and earned his Doctorate from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago.  He has completed ocular disease externships at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, VAMC in Manchester New Hampshire, Pediatrics Externship at the University of Chicago and Illinois Eye Institute, Advanced Care Disease Externship at Illinois Eye Institute. Dr. Beatty is a member of the American Optometric Association, Kansas Optometric Association, Optometric Society of Greater Kansas City, and is a member of numerous professional organizations including Medical Wing's International, where he has volunteered extensively on medical missions throughout Central America, South America, and Africa.

Our Laser Surgery Suite - The Only One of Its Kind in the Kansas City Area

At the Cavanaugh Eye Center, we are proud to offer our patients a state-of-the-art laser suite that is absolutely unique to our practice. Dr. Timothy Cavanaugh has customized this suite to allow him and his staff to achieve the best possible surgical results for his patients. It is the only suite in the Kansas City area to have been built from the ground up specifically for the purpose of being used for laser eye surgery. We have complete control over the environment of the suite, ensuring the ideal temperature and humidity for optimum laser performance and surgical outcomes. It is equipped with a humidifier, dehumidifier, and bacteria filtration system. Truly, there is no safer, more ideal atmosphere in which to perform laser eye surgery.

More on Dr. Timothy Cavanaugh - Renowned Ophthalmologist in the Kansas City Area

Dr. Cavanaugh has performed thousands of laser vision correction procedures to correct all levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in his patients. As a study investigator, he played a vital role in getting refractive lasers approved for use in the United States. Following this, he was the first laser eye surgeon in the Kansas City area to use the microkeratome, the extraordinarily precise surgical instrument used to make incisions in modern LASIK surgery. A true corneal specialist, Dr. Cavanaugh also has extensive experience in performing sutureless, minimal-incision cataract surgery and is nationally recognized for his work in corneal transplantation.
