High-tech Boutique
Cavanaugh Eye Center has evolved into a High-tech Boutique, featuring the latest, state-of-the-art equipment in an atmosphere that is unfailingly warm and accommodating. Truly, patients of our refractive and laser eye surgery center in Overland Park can expect to be treated according to the highest standards of professional care, safety, and respect. The most important factors in a successful outcome of any laser refractive surgery are the surgeon’s experience and skills. But even the most experienced and skilled surgeon needs state-of-the-art technology to produce state-of-the-art results.
Technolas™ Zyoptix Technology
The Technolas™ Zyoptix diagnostic workstation includes Bausch & Lomb Orbscan® IIZ and Bausch & Lomb Zywave ®II Wavefront aberrometer, which combines wavefront and corneal topography diagnostics in one workstation to provide an anatomical and visual “fingerprint” of your eye.
Bausch & Lomb Orbscan® IIz Corneal Topographer
Similar to a topographic map used in geography, the Orbscan corneal topography accurately maps the front and back curvatures, height, and thickness of the cornea, as well as pupil size using a simple, painless test that takes just a few minutes. The information gained from this test helps choose the best laser treatment plan individually customized for you. The Bausch & Lomb Orbscan topographer also helps the doctor identify early stages of corneal irregularities and diseases such as keratoconus.
Bausch & Lomb Orbscan® IIZ system measures up to 9,000 data points in 1.5 seconds giving your eye doctor a precise, three-dimensional picture of your eye's shape and characteristics.
This map shows the bumps and valleys on the corneal surface and is used to ensure the cornea is regular and can be treated with the laser. People with irregular types of astigmatism or corneal disorders, such as Keratoconus, can be screened out prior to surgery. The topography is therefore essential in determining whether or not you are a candidate for LASIK surgery.
Bausch & Lomb Zywave® II Aberrometer
Making proper pre-operative diagnostic measurements is essential to ensuring excellent outcomes for our laser eye surgery patients. Wavefront technology is the most significant recent advancement in LASIK surgery. The Zywave® aberrometer precisely identifies errors within the entire optical system, allowing for a more customized treatment.
An aberrometer measures a wave of light as it travels through your entire eye's optical pathway and then compares it to the way a wave of light travels through an optically perfect eye. A Wavefront 3-dimensional map is created by reflecting light off of your retina and measuring the small imperfections of your entire optical pathway as light travels back out of your eye. By combining this 3-D Wavefront map with Orbscan corneal topography, Dr. Cavanaugh is able to design a customized laser treatment plan unique to your own visual “fingerprint”. For added safety, this information is transmitted wirelessly to the laser, which avoids the possibility of transcription errors.
Bausch & Lomb Zywave® II aberrometer provides correction of higher order aberrations through the 5th order, not just sphere and cylinder and has the largest FDA-approved optical zone.
Technolas™ Zyoptix Laser
As part of our effort to offer the most effective refractive laser eye surgery, Cavanaugh Eye Center is committed to providing the most advanced technology available to our patients. Dr. Timothy Cavanaugh has used his personal experience with all types of lasers, data from FDA clinical trials, and the results of his own comparative study to choose the premier laser on the market today. The Technolas™ laser allows Dr. Cavanaugh and his staff to produce consistently accurate refractive laser eye surgery results.
Technolas™ Zyoptix Laser and The Bausch & Lomb diagnostic workstation which includes Orbscan® IIZ andZywave ®II Wavefront Aberrometer
Technolas™ Zyoptix excimer laser is a precise computerized instrument that uses invisible ultraviolet light to re-shape the cornea during laser refractive surgery. Each pulse of this cool light laser removes only a fractional amount of corneal tissue - about 1/500th of the thickness of a human hair.
Technolas™ Zyoptix Laser
In all their products, Bausch & Lomb has always stood for quality in eye care and their laser is a miracle of modern technology. There is no laser like it in the world - no other laser is capable of delivering such exceptional results. The Technolas Perfect Vision™ laser offers many benefits to our refractive laser eye surgery patients in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, including:
IOL Master
Cavanaugh Eye Center currently uses the IOL master to ensure proper measurements for cataract surgery. If you are seeking cataract surgery in Kansas City, you have come to right place. We use the latest technology and the experience of Dr. Cavanaugh to provide a professional and safe cataract surgery experience.
In cataract surgery or other lens-replacement procedures, vision is improved by replacing the eye's natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL). IOLs come in different powers and sizes to compensate for each patient's individual needs. For best vision after cataract surgery, precise measurements must be taken to determine which IOL to implant. The IOL Master is a high-precision instrument revolutionizing all previous techniques and setting a new standard for IOL calculations, called optical biometry.
Optical biometry using IOL Master does not subject our patients to any discomfort. No local anesthesia is required and there is no risk associated with taking the measurements. The IOL Master is a great advancement in IOL calculation because it uses very short light waves to measure axial length instead of much longer ultrasound waves, resulting in about three times the accuracy and less time than that of ultrasound devices.
Why we've invested in the IOL Master:
The difference between good and great vision after cataract surgery can be attributed to the diagnostic technology used to calculate the appropriate IOL. This technology provides our patients with the opportunity for the best possible visual outcome.
Hansatome Microkeratome
The most important step in the LASIK procedure is formation of the corneal flap. We invested in the most advanced technology, the zero compression Hansatome, to further reduce any risk of complications. Dr. Cavanaugh was the first surgeon in the region to use the microkeratome Near Vision CK in modern LASIK procedures. The Hansatome is trusted by more surgeons worldwide than any other.
NearVision CK
The Radio Frequency Keratoplasty device used during CK procedures uses radio frequency (RF) energy instead of a laser to change the shape of the cornea. Dr. Cavanaugh uses a small hair-like probe to apply controlled RF energy to the edge of the cornea, creating a band of tightening that increases its overall curvature. As a minimally invasive alternative to laser vision correction, CK is a good option for those with presbyopia and low levels of farsightedness.
ViewPoint & Trade Conductive Keratoplasty System, engineered and designed by Refractek, is the first and only CK system licensed in the U.S.
Haag-Streit Octopus® 900 Visual Field Analyzer
The Haag-Streit Octopus® 900 represents the latest breakthrough in visual field testing. Using Frequency Doubling Technology, the Haag-Streit Octopus® 900 will help you conduct a thorough visual field evaluation and assess treatment alternatives. This new product is a clinically validated glaucoma management tool that enables the ophthalmologist to diagnose visual field loss early and accurately.
The frequency doubling effect occurs when black and white gratings are flickered at a high rate, resulting in the patient's perception that the grating has twice the original number of bars. The physiological substrate believed to cause this frequency doubling illusion represents approximately 2% of all ganglion cells in the retina and these specific cells are believed to be the earliest damaged by glaucoma.
Sophisticated Lens Implants
Cataract surgery and refractive lens exchanges involve replacement of the clear lens of the eye with an artificial intraocular lens usually made of plastic, silicone, or acrylic material. There has been an explosion in lens replacement technology recently. The lens options now available for intra-ocular implants have given us the ability to provide a lens customized to each individual's lifestyle, hobbies, and visual demands.
Our patients are now benefiting from new “high-definition” Aspheric lenses and the first ever FDA approved single piece AcrySof Toric lens. The Technolas Perfect Vision™ Zyoptix diagnostic workstation includes Bausch & Lomb Orbscan® IIZ and Bausch & Lomb Zywave ®II Wavefront Aberrometer for individuals with astigmatism to achieve better and more stable vision. This new generation of lenses comes with protective yellow or violet filtering technology to eliminate glare and shields your eyes from harmful UV rays.
In the past, cataract surgery used monofocal lenses that focused at a single distance, which meant most patients required reading glasses in order to read. Recent advances in multifocal lenses (that provide focus at multiple distances) such as ReZoom™ and ReSTOR, allow patients the freedom to be completely free from glasses. Focusing or “accommodating” Crystalens implants are providing patients with exciting options for great clarity at distance and intermediate vision customized to their lifestyle.
